Vegetable-Ayurveda Garden
Our Lotus-Villa Gardens:
The Lotus-Villa garden:
This garden is about 3 acres (or 12.000 m²) in size and is situated directly by the beach. There we grow coconut trees as well as plants that can survive directly by the sea.
During the last few years we have been trying to improve it with the following results:
- A waterfall which our guests and patients call "meditation well" since it invokes a meditative atmosphere.
- A stone bath tub where oil treatments for the skin are carried out.
- A fresh water swimming pool about 1,8m deep (the ground water level is about 1,5m deep. Therefore, none of the pools in this area are very deep).
- A "smokers' corner" where also non-smokers like to spend time since it is not enclosed and therefore always well aired.
- A library where one can quickly get a new book.
- A fish pond with ayurvedic water plants for the kitchen.
At the rear of the garden you will find the "magic kitchen" where ayurvedic oils and medicine are produced. Near-by you also find a workshop, the laundry, the water filtering system, and since mid-2006 we also have a new papaya garden with over 100 trees.
The fruit and vegetable garden:
This garden is about 5km away from Lotus-Villa and is situated in the lagoon "maaduganga". At first, people were laughing about our project since the use of chemical fertilisers is so widespread in Sri Lanka. Even finding experienced helpers who were prepared to change over to organic gardening took some time. We contacted the "Ministry of Agriculture" and there we found enthusiastic support. Currently, professionals from the ministry of agriculture are conducting training courses over several weeks on building compost, healthy and unhealthy chemistry, soil analysis etc.
On a boat trip into the lagoon we will be happy to show you the pride of our Lotus-Villa gardeners.
The coconut garden:
On the same boat trip you can also see the coconut garden. We acquired a plot of land with a few coconut trees next to the vegetable garden to grow coconuts since we need about 50 coconuts a day - mainly for our employees. Our gardeners have now started growing cinnamon plants between the coconut trees to generate some income. We currently have about 5.000 cinnamon plants.
The Ayurveda garden:
To be able to show our guests where their ayurvedic oils and medicines come from, we decided to open the first Ayurveda garden in Sri Lanka. We started this project in (2004). At the moment we work on a new Ayurveda garden with about 200 plants. We are also working on a new book about Ayurveda plants full of information about their names, descriptions, therapeutic use and effects.
