How the oils and drugs are made:


Our consultant doctor, Dr. (Mrs) R. Waidyawansa specialises in two subject areas: one is the production of ayurvedic drugs and oils (her second area of specialisation is the treatment of haemorrhoids). Since there are quite a few quacks within the ayurvedic discipline we are very grateful to have such an experienced specialist with us. A team of expert colleagues support our doctor in the distillation of up to 120! different ingredients for a single oil.

These mixtures are distilled over one or two weeks until a dark liquid - mixed with a thick decoction - is formed. Then the oil is filtered and separated from the decoction. There can be various base oils such as sesame or cinnamon oil. The decoction is then pressed out and small black balls are formed by hand.

For every Dosha there are between 48 and 52 oils which can be used for the most common diseases. Altogether we have therefore around 150 different oils in our store. The doctors also prepare individual mixtures and in special cases distill new oils. Since normal oils take several weeks until they are ready for use we also have our own production in small pots. Very small quantities can be produced in one to two days.

Almost all ayurvedic oils (except those that contain coconut oil) have the advantage that they become more potent the longer they are stored (like good wine).

Near our Lotus-Villa we have made an ayurvedic garden where you can see the plants used for the production of most drugs and oils. Currently, there are over 200 plants in our garden. We are also working on a new book on ayurvedic plants.
